Work issues with VPN

Hi, I am having an issue with windows VPN and our Draytek router, we have a VPN set up at work on our Draytek router (it’s a dial in PPTP) and I have not been able to connect to the VPN via MacOS or windows in spite of trying it in settings (macOS settings and windows VPN settings) and via the Draytek app. I keep getting the same error.

“The VPN connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be completed. The most common cause for this failure is that at least one Internet device (for example, a firewall or a router) between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) protocol packets.
If the problem persists, contact your network administrator or Internet Service Provider.”

I have tried to troubleshoot it, contacted Windows support and removed and re-added the VPN (I can confirm it’s set up correctly as one of my colleagues got it to work).

I’m on windows 11, can anyone advise on how to resolve this issue as I need it set up for an important work project?

Step 1: Don’t use PPTP.

It’s so insecure. Looks like PPTP was removed from MacOS six years ago https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/48569

I’ve used L2TP+IPSec successfully on Windows. I’ve no experience of what works well on Mac.

Others hopefully can offer advice. Maybe use the Draytek VPN client.

Which model and FW are you using?

I had to upgrade the firmware on mine to get IKEv2 EAP sec working, but SSL VPN worked fine before that (Vigor2865)
I wasted so much time trying to get it to work thanks to Draytek incompetence.

I had the same issue as well. L2TP on iOS devices would connect with no issues but on any windows machines I had I could t get a connection. After a bit of research it seems it’s a known issue with windows that doesn’t seem to be getting fixed.

The solution that works for me is to use the Draytek smartVPN client on windows and connect via a SSL connection.

Make sure the remote network IP range is not a common one ie 192.168.1.x as it will clash with most default routers. I always set the company networks to something less usual such as 10.10.x.x.

Thank you for the help, I think L2TP over IPsec is set up on. The dial in profile as well but I have not been successful with this method either.

I also have tried with the Draytek client but without success on both devices.

Agree with not using PPTP. I would go as far as it should be disabled completely.

We use SSL dial in with MOTP for both Windows and Mac and use SmartVPN client.

Vigor266ac and 4.4.1

SSL VPN works well on Mac.

I guess either 2866 or 2766 either way there is a newer version for those.

Did you follow these steps?
