What do you like about Proton Drive? What can be improved? What do other competitors like Filen, Mega etc. better?
Its in beta compared to other services. Proton photos on drive on ios is like 6 months in testflight
I like it and for me it works fine but i really miss the Linux client. The only reason i cannot install Linux on my laptop is because of that.
Other than that, I’m waiting for better photos management and sync.
Linux support should be mandatory at this point. I tried running it in linux with rclone but was pretty much unusable, had to go back to windows on my work pc. Other than that I don’t have any complaints.
Needs work before I could recommend it to anyone.
For example: No way to add to photos from the desktop app nor move things between drive and photos
We are still waiting for the auto-sync photo feature on iOS.
Also, no Linux client is absurd at this point.
It works fine as part of the Unlimited Plan so I use it. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it over and above the competitors on it’s own
Absolutely a beta level app. You can’t share folders with other people, you can’t buy more storage without upgrading your entire proton account, no photo sync & library support on iOS, no Linux, etc. It’s a very disappointing product at this stage in its lifecycle.
Had to switch back to Google bc no Linux support
It‘s fine for me. Just using it to store files as a backup for my NAS. The only feature that would be great in the future would be document editing like Google has with Drive and their office apps but that‘s kind of a different product.
I like it as a truly private backup for my sensitive data that isn’t going to be scanned to train AI or show me relevant ads.
I don’t like that it doesn’t have at least basic documents and spreadsheets editor (like OpenOffice integration or something).
It also has a very limited functionality for live backups.
It’s fine to slowly upload your files but everything beyond that is either not implemeted yet or is implemented very half-heartedly (like photos).
Its great!
BUT! The way the backup works, after reinstalling windows is really really bad!
Idealy i would login to Drive on the “new” PC, and it would detect my “new” PC, and ask if i wanted to restore my files, or some > accept, and it should start downloading the files, to the places located.
But i litterly have to go into the drive folder > other computers > right click the “old” pc, and select “Keep on device” to download it all > after that i manually need to move all the files back to where they should be > and then delete the “old” pc ( if wanted to ).
Can we please get this optimized to be muuuch easier and automatic? Not to mention the Initilaze when opening Drive for the first time… that takes like 3-4 hours before its done.
Other then that, i love it
I would love the opportunity to purchase different storage tiers.
I gave up waiting on Proton and got a Filen lifetime plan. No Linux support=worthless for privacy.
And bear in mind, that’s despite getting it free with my Protonmail Ultimate sub, which I only use for email, as their Linux VPN isn’t good enough either.
I can’t even sync my files properly. For example, if I install it on another computer, or even reinstall it on the same computer, I have to resync and resetup everything again. It should be same as Google Drive or Onedrive. Also not able to save files directly from Proton Mail and Proton Pass is a big minus point.
Needs a native Linux client before I take it seriously. ymmv
I’ve been subscribing to Proton’s services for a while–got the visionary plan in large part due to the promise of Proton Drive. However, I’m strongly considering leaving at this point because of their negligence to provide a proper Linux client. I had thought that with their commitments to privacy, open source, and general approach, that they’d be good Linux advocates but instead I find they’re treating Linux users like an afterthought, if at all. It’s been a very disappointing aspect of what would otherwise be an outstanding set of services.
Still waiting for the iOS photo backup or sync feature. And have it better integrated with the rest of the Proton apps
Where to start?
I compare proton to mega.io because I have an account there and use this service.
- Speed
- Upload via the website often freze
- In mega.io, in the browser, when I select a file and press e.g. F2, I can change the file name,
Inmega.io, in the browser (and in most other clouds), when I right-click on a file, it will open the context menu of the application (with options for sharing, renaming, copying, etc.) and not the browser.- Thumbnails for video files. It’s not a killer feature, but it’s nice if it is.
- Option to play the video file. At least for AV1, VP9 etc.
Drag and drop…- No software for Linux. The most important point. Mega is also a bit disappointing here, because it would be nice if they delivered it in a flatpak. But the proton doesn’t provide any…
Generally, if you lack ideas for development, create a free account on a competitor’s service and see for yourself how far behind you are. For example, the relatively new filen.io has a client for Linux and there is no problem with the fact that there are dozens of distributions.
The only thing I don’t complain about about ProtonDrive are the differences between the paid and free versions of the service. I accept the general rule that if I don’t pay with money, I have to pay with something else, so I choose money.
