In your opinion, what is the best VPN and why?

How do you like it? I have ProtonMail and am looking into getting their VPN but I’m not sure if I would want my mail and VPN in the same place.

I hopped a few before jumping on the Nord-wagon several months ago. Glad I did.

Especially since my torrents speeds, when using a proxy node and setting up the torrent client to use a socks proxy, are way better than they were with other providers.

I use NordVPN. Solid all around.

I use NordVPN too. Shopping on Amazon is a pain in the … otherwise works great!

Oh hey I didn’t realize that he moved on from just having a google sheet to actually hosting a website for the comparison.

I use it as well. I almost get my full 100mbps on some servers. Their proxy add-on for browsers is great.

$3/year was for the AWS? Were you just spinning up a virtual VPN server on their service?

TunnelBear is not as fast, nor secure compared to other VPNs on the market. It’s performance is mediocre. Plus, they keep logs.

Edit: if you use a VPN for banking and sensitive I formation, you need a VPN with the best possible encryption. I’m a tad on the surprised side that nobody has brought up ExpressVPN yet, they have good encryption, and so does Nord.

Edit 2: also with TunnelBear, you have very few options when it comes to servers to connect to.

That’s how I was pronouncing it in my mind. Thanks.

How much is Mullvad? I paid around $75 for 3 years of NordVPN and am planning on switching after its over.

I could be way off base, as I’m a bit of a n00b myself, but afaik there are two schools of thought with regard to VPN:

  1. I want to be able to connect to my home network/fileshares/etc from external networks (in which case, the parent comment is a great suggestion).

  2. I want to run all of my personal/home internet traffic through an encrypted private 3rd party to obscure it because I don’t trust my internet service provider not to monitor and/or log my internet activity; or to appear as though I’m in a different geographic location (for any of a variety of reasons). I think this may be the scenario OP was asking about. I’ve heard good things about NordVPN, but can’t say for sure…

So since it hasn’t quite been answered yet… He said to run a VPS, meaning pay for a virtualized server on a platform like Digital Ocean, Amazon AWS, etc.

It is probably all about amount of data you are pushing for cost here, but I know D.O. has a bare bones VPS for like $5 a month.

Overall reason is because now you “own” the server you are pointing your VPN at, unlike paying NordVPN or another 3rd party. In theory then, you could go with a more anonymous VPS company, pay with cryptocurrency, etc, and if you trust the VPS, your anonymity is generally intact (for a lower threat model like running an anonymous blog or something) without hopping through TOR.

Of course this means you have to know how to properly stand up OpenVPN on a server and manage the machine in just the command line, since it is not like these servers have Remote Desktop Protocol installed by default. But then, in theory, you control the “logs” since you control the server that you VPN to.

Edit: also note, as he said there are scripts for the setup making things easier, but have you read over the code in that script? Don’t just go about running someone elses stuff on your server without at least a quick analysis!

Yes probably, I use open vpn on Ubuntu but I have it installed as the native os

Not if you (the owner) don’t log traffic.

Register free aws on amazon with fake name.

But for some reason I got downvoted. Guess not everyone agrees lol

There are quite a few relatively good alternatives to protonvpn that are being widely used but it really comes down to what you want your vpn to be of. I think is alright to have both mail and vpn from proton since its based in switzerland with a very neutral outlook on internet laws. Just find something that suits your needs and i think it will do you good.

Sorry if it’s a dumb question, but what’s PIA and MACE?

Still better than getting a 1000 opinions on whats best.
