Norton lifelock email scam

I got an email claiming to be from Norton lifelock stating that my account has been billed approx $400 for a renewal fee. The email address it came from indicates it is a scam (random letters/numbers gmail account). I never had a paid Norton lifelock account but I downloaded the free app version of Norton password manager on an Apple device. I did not get any emails from Apple saying I have been billed (in case the scammer accessed my Apple account through a leak with the free app subscription) but I am unable to check my bank account directly for another 6-8 hours. The scam email didn’t have any links. It did have a phone number to call with any questions. Is the scam hoping people will call the number contesting the bill then give bank info to the scammers?

Sounds like a !refund scam.

Yes, it is indeed an attempt at a refund scam. You call the number, they convince you they need your card/banking details to “refund” you (even though you lost nothing but haste has you calling) and they take what they can get.

Never call these numbers back. Just ignore and delete.

I just got the same email. Norton on their website is asking anyone who receives emails like this to forward it to [email protected]

I forwarded it then hit the “report spam” button.

Doesn’t your bank have a website at least (type in the URL, do not use any links from emails/texts/messages)?

“Renewal” means that you were charged to begin with. I keep telling friends/family/clients that they need to track all of their financial transactions independently of their bank and credit card accounts.

If Norton was a vendor, they would show up on your software’s payee list and a repeating transaction would populate around this time. If they are not a vendor, then you don’t have to deal with them. Any charges you would deal with the bank/credit card directly. No “Card Not Present” CNP email/text alert, no problem!

BTW, notice that these emails never have the last 4 digits of the card number that they are going to charge?

Whew! I just got this email, from Adam G Lucero - [email protected]

and I was panicking too. It’s a scam. I never had Norton.

Thanks for being here, reddit.

I got this is it a scam?

It’s a scam. The guy I asked questions from cussed at me then hung up. I called him back and suggested to him not to cuss at me.

He then told me the only way to cancel this was to go to a website, which redirected me to Google Play Store to install an app. I installed the app which led me to no where. He then told me to go to one of his affiliated store CVS and for me to purchase a gift card.

I then laughed and told him he’s a scammer and I hope he gets caught.

The same is happening to me and I am from Egypt. Imagine to be charged with 600 $ which is 18,500 Egyptian Pounds!
I’ve received this email 4 times till now. But from the first one, I knew it was a scam because I knew myself I would never pay this much on anything even my life LOL1

Well. By this thread, simply existing, I understand the email I just received is indeed a scam. Thank you for existing and carry on.

Thx for the thread, they’ve found me today.
I’m glad scammers don’t know how a real corporate works & how an invoice looks like.

my urge of wanting to play with these scammers is so damn high :joy:

I received one for $249 this morning, so I called the number. (1833-493-9599). A man with an Indian accent asked for the last four digits of my order number. He confirmed the number that I was calling from. He asked if I were sitting in front of the computer and I told him no. He told me to go in front of my computer. I told him I can’t, because I was on my way to work. He asked for a good time to call me back, so he can walk me through the refund process. He said that way I wouldn’t have to worry about it renewing again. I told him if he can’t cancel it over the phone, I will go through my bank to cancel it.
He was very persistent, I figure it was a scam trying to gain access to my personal information, so I hung up on him.

how do they know my name?

This is one of the many reasons I love Reddit. Got this email this AM…popped over here to make sure it was the scam I thought it was.

I got one of these just this morning and I clicked on the attachment. There was no phone number to call and now I’m worried that the whole scam is to click on the attachment and now I’ve got malware on my phone. Has anyone else clicked on the attachment but it turned out OK?

Thanks. This looks exactly like what is going on… I was getting stressed since I can’t double check my bank account with my bank but now I can relax.

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the refund scam. Refund scams usually start with a spam email about a fake transaction, although they can also be sent through SMS or any other messaging service. The message will provide you with a phone number to call if you want to cancel the transaction, and if you call the scammers will try to get you to provide credit card or banking information in order to receive your refund. Scammers have been taking advantage of Paypal’s invoice system to send out realistic scam emails through Paypal itself, here is a news article about that technique: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/08/paypal-phishing-scam-uses-invoices-sent-via-paypal/. Here is a Snopes article regarding the Norton variant of this scam: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/norton-email-renewal-scam/.

I got a very similar email mentioning a $556 transaction! What is this all about?
