Twitch Turbo Pricing Increase

Sadly, whatever they charge is still cheaper than subbing every single show I like to watch. I mean, if they all subbed me back it I’d have the money but it doesn’t work like that. Lol.

They want you to go outside more, its summer, not an ideal time for any company which relies on people to stay indoors to use to raise rates.

Honestly I thought 8.99 was expensive but I kept it and two subs, one a prime and one for a friend I watch. However now I think I am just done with twitch and when my current Turbo runs out I am just deleting my account.

Who thinks this will herald in a whole new advertising experience and not a good one. I expect ads to become more frequent.

I’ll just quit watching Twitch entirely if they keep forcing these ads. When you play an ad, and it stops playing when I take focus off that tab and then picks up where it left off when I come back to it, and then you think I’m sitting through “1 of 7” of this garbage, hell no. I’ll sooner just quit using Twitch entirely.

Yep. They even mention in the email that the price might go down, that made me slightly hopeful that they were not going to screw us over.

But even that:

Note: If the price of Turbo has decreased for you and you’d like to
continue being a Turbo subscriber, you’ll need to cancel your existing
subscription and resubscribe at the lower price. We know that’s
inconvenient, and it’s something we’ve fixed for all new Turbo
subscriptions moving forward.

So for the few countries that got a price decrease, you actually have to cancel and renew just to get the new pricing. I assume it keeps going as always at the higher price if you do nothing. But don’t worry they fixed that now so they can change the pricing at any time now with less hassle for them.

I can’t upvote this enough.

This is a lie by omission. “Hey look over here how we’re making it cheaper for countries who can’t afford US rates!— but don’t look how we’re raising the price for the absolute majority of subscribers”.

That’s like asking, "would you like some fries with your Ketchup? " The main point is to raise prices, but we are highlighting a few countries who will pay less.

I’m glad people are seeing past the marketing-spin nonsense.

Class action lawsuit time!

It was already about $14 in AUD for turbo before the change (once you’ve converted) - I’ve been paying for it for a while

Turbo isn’t worth buying if you only watch and sub to a few streamers, however if you watch a bunch of streamers and don’t want to sub to them all (because that WOULD be insane) then it’s a good option to get around the ads without an adblocker

I think I am going to have to. That also means I am not going to be watching Twitch much anymore. The number of ads that show up when I am not logged in with Turbo is insane, and makes the whole platform unusable.

I will have to look into other solutions, or just watch the few channels I will sub too instead of the $9 a month I am paying now.

Like you said, if they had done anything to increase the value of Turbo for users it might be easier to swallow. But this is just a kick in the balls, here’s a 33% price hike and you get nothing. All the new features they are working on are just about making more money, and not about making the site better for users.

…and removing redundant positions.

For me all this is going to do is hurt their diversity of streamers even more. The reason I do not sub very much is because I watch lots of different streamers. Many smaller streamer, who build keyboards, and stuff like that. Now I will cancel Turbo and maybe sub to a couple of streamers I watch more often, and never watch anyone else because the ads are unbearable.

New CEO is already looking like a real POS.

The 8.99 is usd, so after conversion, it was closer to $13 cad anyway.

its damaging to both imo, i been subbed to turbo for probs 2 years? and i still sub to the creators i watch often to support the channels, now, the folks i watch less often i am probs gonna watch less, if at all… and they are great people, but just throwing on a 40% increase is bonkers and gonna reduce the amount of channels people watch. i kinda feel the need to go to the lesser watched channels and apologize that i will be watching less as twitch ‘almost’ doubled the price of turbo.

I don’t know of any adblocker that works on twitch.

(If there is one, someone please tell me, please god)

Does any work on android?

I agree that there’s a LOT of bs from twitch, but I do find issue with your reasoning.

Your understanding of what is being offered under Twitch Turbo is incorrect. All Turbo does is prevent the display of ads sold by Twitch within the video feed. If a creator has an ad as part of their graphics package, that’s not something Twitch gets a piece of, so it’s not something they can remove for you.

Cancel Turbo if you want to, it’s your money, but if completely ad-free was your assumption, you may have initially bought something you didn’t understand.

I don’t think those are ads that interrupt the stream they are the little sponsorship logos and stuff the streamers put in the corners.

I suspect they plan to increase ad frequency.

Turbo Viewers have always still count to the ad value before this change. It just never showed.

this is the first topic that pops up in google so i hopped in here
