VPN usage in Linux Mint

I just switched from Windows 10 where I used cyberghost vpn and I was able to successfully used Reddit, Google and it’s services, YouTube, and other sites.

However, once I made the switch to Linux Mint. It seems like I can’t access these same websites when the VPN is activated.

Crazy thing is I use the same VPN for my phone and I can access all these sites on my phone.

Has anyone ran into this issues? I paid for this vpn and I want to use what I paid for until it expires. What’s going on?

Also what vpn do you guys use if any. Because I might have to switch. Thanks.

I use my own, although there’s a Linux client, which does work as I’ve tested, I find it more convenient to just go through the VPN in my router for my Linux PC.

I used Nord in the past and it worked well. I use Mullvad and it works great. Maybe theres something in settings thats needs to be turned on?

I use NordVPN. It has settings for a kill switch and autoconnect, but you have to turn those on. Basically the internet won’t work or connect if the VPN is disconnected.

Maybe your VPN has certain settings turned on/off? Or the VPN is installed but not on/active?

I’ve WireGuard setup at home and wanted to connect home from the office.

Via Android everything always worked, I tried Mint for the first time and bruhhhh

It turned out, it was missing a package called resolvconf and without it, the VPN couldn’t setup ths DNS.
After installing the package, WireGuard connected right away.

Run the client via terminal so you can see the output. Also, check logs.

Could you go to ipleak.net and make sure your second DNS don’t match your local ip? I’ll get you after this

You have misconfigured something but nobody can help because you haven’t provided any details whatsoever. I’ve had no trouble using Mint with Mullvad, my own home-rolled VPN, and my office OpenVPN instance.

This is probably what I should do eventually tbh. You have a specific router that has a VPN in it or did you do it on your own?

Been thinking about switching to mullvad.

I’m not sure about settings. Cyberghost doesn’t give me a lot of options unless I am missing something in the command line.

I did notice though that in Linux my actual ip4 gateway and address changes. Whereas in windows it never did that. So perhaps that’s what it is?

Thing is, I have internet and YouTube works whenever it wants and stops working at random. It’s only specific sites. For example, if I go to duckduckgo then everything works or if I use Spotify or discord. Those things work when my vpn is activated.

It’s most certainly active and I have checked with tests.

Thank you for the information.

I have been using cyberghost for the past two years and haven’t noticed any malware on my computer luckily. I fully intend to finish out my subscription because I paid for it.

Mullvad will definitely be my next VPN. Isn’t Sweden part of the 5/9/14 eyes though?

I think I have that and is not missing.

I ran cat /etc/resolv.conf with no issue. I saw my info. I also have hardinfo as well.

So yeah the VPN uses it’s own DNS. What I did was disable my ISP DNS, changed the DNS on my actual wifi connection to a free open source DNS and then I was able to access the sites I had issues with.

What will this tell me/you?

Not even sure what details you want. Thanks though.

I bought an Asus AC-86U and flashed Koolshare Merlin firmware, then installed the v2ray client on top of that. Then I was able to add all my servers in.

Thats may it. Mullvad all you do is get an account number and pay every 30 days like a prepaid phone, no sign up or anything.

I had similar issue where some of the sites I tried to access won’t load with VPN activated but I realized both my DNS server one shows foreign DNS but the other local/ISP’s DNS which was causing the issue. I fixed by having both DNS with the same foreign address using nano config and now things work fine

Well, basic stuff like can you ping 8.8.8.8 or anything else? Can you resolve FQDNs? Are there any specific error messages? What client are you using? Are there any logs? etc etc etc

Hmm okay I’ll look into doing something like this in the future.

What made you go this route?
