Youtube Premium not available on island

I’ve just moved back to the island and am frustrated that YTP is not available in this region - Does anyone know why, and is it something that we can campaign for here through the MHKs or is it a Youtube side issue?

Google doesn’t recognize the Isle of Man as a country.

If you really want YTP, set a vpn to the uk (or use McDonald’s as that breaks out in the uk), clear your cache and sign up using your IOM credentials. Last I checked it was location based signup, not payment. They may have changed it but I somehow doubt that.

Really not worth our MHK’s wasting our tax money on when they have so many other things to waste it on.

As already mentioned, sign up with a VPN. Once you’ve signed up it’ll work as usual but you’ll just get a notice pop up when you launch the app saying that all features might not be available.

Use a VPN to India, you’ll get the family account for about £6 a month.

I was talking with DfE last week about this and the IOM government is currently working to resolve this with Google and ensure that this is not an issue going forward. We raised it as a concern with our Innovator Visa and not being able to access services we wanted to use with our business.

Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

And I used a VPN to USA to renew my YouTube Premium account last week. I had forgotten how annoying the constant ads were. Ick.

Only reason I have it is because I got a free trial with my Samsung galaxy and after the trial was over it just started charging me and I kept it lol

What’s YouTube Premium?
Will I have to enquire with Doctor Google what it is? Rhetorical question, okay, I’ll ask the Dr Google.

Honestly didn’t think that anyone cared enough to notice that it wasn’t available :joy: anyone with an ounce of sense wouldn’t pay for it in the first place

Use a VPN to sign up for it.

Use a VPN or sign up through GamsGo.com.

Have u tried using a vpn

Ad free is why I pay for the premium services - if you want to download videos etc, I just connect my VPN and it’s fine. As far as I’m aware, we have never had access to YT premium on the island unless via VPN

I use YouTube via Sky and Amazon as well as on my PC. This week I just gave up on Sky as I was getting multiple ads on one video. Somehow on Amazon Prime ads were almost eliminated apart from a single RBC Wealth management, which seems to be everywhere and cannot be skipped.

I just checked and there seems to be very little advertising on YouTube on my PC at the moment. It may be that advertising increases during peak times.

I believe Google just recognises the Isle of Man as not being UK. Google apps for Android can also be a problem although there are other ways to get them.

I already have the account - that’s not the issue. The features I want to use aren’t available when in use. And having to boot a VPN up on every device, every time I want to use YouTube is to much of a faff. (Not to mention, you can’t use a vpn on work equipment ;))

The ability to play videos in the background with your phone locked only works while using a VPN, although I think the ads will be gone regardless

What don’t you understand about her not wanting to use VPN? It is YouTube’s fault, and a big one.

Yeah I have an account already, that’s not the issue. It’s the background player and YouTube music perks that I’m missing

That’s reassuring! Thanks for the insight - the no ads still works, but all of the other features are disabled still so I would love to see this resolved

Don’t hold your breath! There is only one credit card provider and other financial options are not available, despite years of claims by the government that there are no reasons for these limitations.

Did anything come of your conversation with the DfE on this subject?
